Have you ever stopped to wonder why we all use the same inefficient keyboard layout? QWERTY wasn’t built for comfort or speed, it was built for typewriters… in the 1870s. Keeping common letter pairs such as ‘T’ and ‘H’ apart was a way to keep typebars from jamming. And, as technology progressed, we just never changed it. Thankfully, there are now some cool ways to customize your key layout and my favorite is EPKL.
EPKL (short for EPiKaL Portable Keyboard Layout) is a lightweight tool that lets you remap your keyboard into something far more efficient. You can either download the full copy or just run the .exe file off a USB drive instead if you happen to be on a locked-down work or school PC.
At its core, EPKL is about better typing. It supports advanced layouts like Colemak-DH, which many people find faster and easier on the hands than QWERTY. But the real standout is something called the “Extend layer.” It works like a hidden control layer allowing you to hold a key (often Caps Lock) and suddenly your home row turns into arrow keys, navigation controls, and more. It takes a bit to get used to but once you do, I guarantee you’ll see your keyboard efficiency improve dramatically.

EPKL allows you to remap your keys to a more efficient layout. Your wrists will thank you.

It also goes deep on customization. You can remap keys, add special characters, and tweak ergonomic mods to fit your typing style. There’s even a built-in learning system (Tarmak) that helps you switch layouts step by step instead of all at once.
That said, it’s not plug-and-play. The setup can feel dense, and you’ll likely spend some time editing config files. Also be aware that it can also clash with certain games or apps that expect standard key behavior. I recommend EPKL more for typists than gamers.
Still, if you type a lot and care about comfort or speed, EPKL is a great way to free yourself from the clunky QWERTY framework. Now just work on your keyboard shortcut game and you’ll be typing and navigating your PC like Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty—no guarantees.
