Assad Zaman Shares Songs From His Armand Playlist Ahead of THE VAMPIRE LESTAT Rotem Rusak | usagoldmines.com

Assad Zaman’s Armand playlists have become things of legend in the Interview with the Vampire/The Vampire Lestat fandom. In a beautiful, transformative fandom like this one, fans are always eagerly searching to understand their favorite characters more deeply. And it’s abundantly clear that Assad Zaman, who plays Armand, has an incredible grasp on the twisted vampire he plays on our screens. But, of course, to Zaman, these playlists are deeply personal, something we all fully respect. In the past, he’s shared, “I told showrunner Rolin Jones about one of the songs in it. No, the rest of it is mine, I’m afraid. It’s quite special to me,” and in a recent featurette, noted, “I’m very precious about [my playlists], they’re very close to me.” And so, we should, all of us, as a collective fanbase, feel quite honored that Zaman has shared two incredible songs from his Armand playlists with us. You can listen to them below. (And you can also read our full interview with Zaman about Armand here.)

Taking me up on my offer to trade a song from my Armand playlist for a song from his Armand playlist, Zaman revealed, “I’m literally pulling up my Spotify playlist now so I can find it.” And shared, “The first one that has come up, and actually one that I actually really, really love. It’s “The Flame” by Johnny Jewell. That’s a nice instrumental there. And also, “Windswept” by Johnny Jewell. So there you go, that’s two.”

Now you, too, can get into the mind of Armand as imagined by Assad Zaman. We find it incredibly fitting that these two songs from Zaman’s Armand playlist actually feature in the Twin Peaks Season 3 score and were written for David Lynch. Twin Peaks, in all its surreal, emotional, atmospheric, and disorienting glory, does feel like something Armand might enjoy, right up there with blenders. And when we press play on these instrumental tracks, their blend of haunting and hissing sound, rich and deep, somehow unsettling and unsettled, but beautiful, really works. “Windswept,” especially, has this ticking-clock cadence that never stops, as different wailing notes swirl around it, murmuring of loneliness and yearning. A YouTube commenter notes, “Such a hauntingly beautiful song. A soundtrack for years misspent; the sound of time wasted; whispers of everything you haven’t done. just like listening to your life passing by. Chronological helplessness.” And what is Armand but “chronological helplessness.”

The description of the album as a whole, also titled “Windswept,” additionally offers us such a perfect bullseye when it comes to capturing the spirit of Armand; it gives us chills. Assad Zaman, we have to say, is a genius Armand playlist maker. Here’s what it says in full:

Written for David Lynch & featured throughout Showtime’s limited event series Twin Peaks: The Return, Johnny Jewels solo album Windswept is a fourteen-part journey into the beauty & the horror one expects of the Lynchian. This collection is rich in midnight atmosphere & sullen, somnambulant synths part plaintive ambience, part haunting lounge jazz, all ethereal & movingly other-worldly. Much of the album will be unforgettable for fans of Twin Peaks: several of these songs accompanied the shows most enduring & indelible images.

Includes contributions by Desire & the divine rendition of Blue Moon performed by Chromatics. A record of deep sorrow & splendor, of overflowing misery & grace, Windswept is a both an indispensable counterpart to Twin Peaks & a self-contained marvel on its own.

Outside the offices of Lucky 7 Insurance in Nevada, clutching reams of paperwork, feeling for something he cant quite articulate, Dougie Jones stands at the base of a bronze statue. A melancholic saxophone calls out to him from beyond…Windswept.

The description could literally be about The Vampire Lestat‘s Armand. From “rich in midnight atmosphere & sullen, somnambulant synths; part plaintive ambiance, part haunting lounge jazz, all ethereal & movingly other-worldly” to “deep sorrow & splendor… overflowing misery & grace.” Well, we’ll let you sit in those feelings. Overflowing misery and grace.
