Earlier this week, OpenAI announced via release notes that it has updated its most widely used AI model: GPT-5.5 Instant.
According to the company, GPT-5.5 Instant should now be better at understanding the underlying intent of a question and keeping track of context across multiple messages. This should make it easier for it to provide more relevant answers even in longer conversations.
OpenAI also states that GPT-5.5 Instant has improved at understanding and following complex instructions. If a user specifies multiple requirements or constraints in a prompt, the model should be better able to take all of them into account in its response.
In addition, the model is also said to be better at adapting when the user clarifies their requests or objects to a response. Searches for products and local businesses are also said to have improved through more effective use of location data.
One caveat with this update: unlike the usual big announcements that come with large breakthroughs and feature rollouts, this one is pretty vague and lacking in real data and takeaways. It’s a minor release note in the grand scheme, so we’ll see how it shakes out in actual use.
