For those who have spent a lot of time on Android (or computers and other tech in general), you’re likely aware of the term used for disruptions in a system’s UI experience. We call it jank. Over the years, with beefed up chipsets and RAM, plus plenty of behind-the-scenes work done by software engineers, Android has gotten a whole lot smoother. This week, the Chrome team updated everyone on just how much jank they have been able to eliminate.
According to its blog post, the Chrome team has successfully reduced the frequency of janky scrolls in Chrome on Android by 48%.

But how? There is a very scientific explanation for that, which the team outlined very well. The TL;DR version: When you swipe your finger across a phone screen, Chrome needs to redraw the page every fraction of a second to match your finger’s movement. This work is divided inside of Chrome, and when the work isn’t done at the same time, the end result are stutters and missed frames.
Using advanced tracking tools, the team at Chrome reassigned tasks which allowed for improved processing. Additionally, it began to use prediction to determine where your finger was going to scroll based on previous touches. That is the most simplistic explanation I can provide, as I can barely read most of what the team wrote. It’s way over my head.
Long story short, Chrome browsing on Android has gotten much smoother ever since this work began in 2023. And for that, we thank you, Chrome team.
