Despite the odds, it appears that Cher Horowitz is returning to our screens after all. It wasn’t that long ago that we reported that Peacock had passed on greenlighting a Clueless sequel series, starring Alicia Silverstone as her iconic character from the ’90s comedy classic. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, the Clueless sequel series has now found a home at Paramount+. This is a bit of a homecoming, since Paramount produced the original Amy Heckerling Clueless movie back in 1995. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (creators of The O.C. and Gossip Girl) will write and executive produce the series.
Paramount+ head of original programming released this statement about the upcoming Clueless series:
Clueless is coming home. Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone’s Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We’re especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”
In the show, Cher will now be a successful business owner, raising her own daughter who is about to enter high school. We don’t know who her kid’s dad is yet. But we have a strong feeling it’s not her stepbrother Josh, played famously by Paul Rudd in the original film. Although we sincerely hope he makes some kind of cameo appearance. He owes his whole career to the original Clueless film, after all.
Dan Hedaya, who played Cher’s gruff lawyer father, is 86 years old now. But he’s still acting, so maybe we’ll get to see him show up. Now, if only someone with brains would save the proposed Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot Hulu canceled. If another streamer saved Cher, maybe fellow 1990s icon Buffy Summers is next. We live in hope.
