Google Adds App Lock to Pixel Phones in New Update Kellen | usagoldmines.com

The Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 update that Google sent out on Friday has several new features that were unexpectedly included and we might all benefit from. For one, a new “App Lock” feature brings much-needed security to almost any app on your Pixel phone.

Once updated to Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, you can long-press on an app and then choose a new “App Lock” option from the menu that appears.

Why would you want the ability lock an app on Android? Should someone get ahold of your phone, if it were to be unlocked, they could then access just about every single app and all of its content. However, by having an App Lock, you add yet another layer of security to apps even if someone were to sneak past the lock screen.

With an App Lock active on an app, it requires a fingerprint unlock, face unlock, or your pattern in order to be opened.

Android 17 - App Lock Feature

As you can see above, Google says that by adding an app lock to an app, you limit notification content (hidden) from it, while widgets and shortcuts for it are removed. Of course, because Google cares so very much about AI, the AI agents and services you’ve allowed to access the app will still have that access. Jesus.

You can also find controls for App Lock in settings. From the settings area, you’ll be able to see a list of all of your apps and can then toggle the app lock on for each.

Nice, right?
