The LG UltraGear 27GX790A-B (catchy!) looks pretty normal for an OLED at first glance. It’s 27 inches with a 2560×1440 resolution, which is hitting the standard for gaming displays with laser precision. But this model’s biggest upgrade is a super-speedy panel. At 480Hz, with a maximum 480 frames per second visible, it’s quite possible that this thing is too fast for you to actually use with your beefy gaming PC. And in my case, my puny, tired human eyeballs.

Why would you need that much speed? This is for the ultra-competitive gamers out there, typically in first-person shooters and similar online games. We’re talking Counter-Strike, Valorant, Marvel Rivals, the sort of games where “split-second” is considered pokey. Those games, and the gamers who compete in them at high levels with frightening reflexes, can actually make use of nearly 500 refreshes with every tick of the clock.

Outside of the color and contrast boost of OLED and the crazy speed, you get compatibility with AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync, a couple of USB-A ports for other gadgets, and a bit of RGB bling on the back. The included stand for this monitor actually looks pretty good, with a nice height and adjustable options, but I’d still prefer a full monitor arm for maximum ergonomic adjustments.
