It’s a bummer any time an actor has to leave a project for reasons out of their control. It always presents a “what might have been” scenario. Ryan Hurst really would have made a great Kratos in the Prime Video God of War series. Especially after a great turn as Mentor in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. But, unfortunately, Hurst suffered an injury while on the GoW set and had to bow out of the series. So who then could take his place? Your new Kratos is no stranger to franchise properties nor extensive body makeup. It’s none other than Dave Bautista.
As reported by Variety, Bautista—of Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune fame—will step into the shoes and beard of the titular, but now retired, god of war. The series, which adapts the 2018 game about a grizzled older Kratos living in relative peace in Scandinavia with his son, Atreus. Prime had announced Hurt’s casting in January 2026, with filming beginning in the spring. The actor suffered a torn bicep which required surgery. The production will restart in 2027, but without Hurst. All the scenes he already shot will need a redo with Bautista, obvs.
Prime has given God of War a two-season order, presumably also to adapt the 2022 game God of War: Ragnarok. Other cast members include Callum Vinson as Atreus, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin.
Ronald D. Moore, developer of the 2004 Battlestar Galactica is in charge of the series. Here’s the official logline for God of War to deliver a bit more clarity:
God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.
