It’s not every superhero movie (especially these days) that wins over critics and audiences and continues to do so for weeks after its initial bow. In the case of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a movie which I really loved, the greater moviegoing crowd seemed to love it too. And maybe we shouldn’t be surprised; after all, Tom Holland’s previous Spider-Man outing, No Way Home, cleaned up back then too. But that was in 2021. A very different moviegoing time for us all. Still, Brand New Day has just spent its fourth consecutive weekend at the top of the box office, with a worldwide take over $2.2 billion.

On the U.S. all-time box office, in just a month, Brand New Day has crossed $854 million to take the number three spot away from its previous entry, No Way Home. It only needs to make another $3.5 million to overtake Avengers: Endgame for the number two all-time. Brand New Day would basically need to stop making money altogether right now for it not to go ahead of Endgame. In order to catch the current number one domestically, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, it would need to make basically another $78.3 after overtaking Endgame. Not out of the realm of possibilities, especially when you consider in its fourth weekend, Brand New Day made another $39 million.
This weekend doesn’t look to offer much in the way of competition for ol’ Spidey. We love Coyote vs. Acme, but we’d be pretty shocked if it lit the box office on fire. And that really holds true for most wide releases over the next few weeks. It really won’t be until (maybe) Practical Magic 2 on September 11 or Resident Evil on September 18 that could be the next big box office winner. By that point, at its current trajectory, Brand New Day will be way over the necessary threshold.
When it comes to worldwide all time, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s chances to take the number one slot seem a bit less likely. Currently, at just about $2.22 billion, the movie sits at number six. For it to move all the way up to overtake number one—still f***ing Avatar for the love of Pete—Brand New Day needs nearly $704 million more. Does it have it to make almost another three-quarters of a billy? I don’t know.
In any case, the superhero movie landscape has been looking a bit peaked in recent years, but not when it comes to Spider-Man. We’ll see what happens with Avengers: Doomsday later this year, Man of Tomorrow next year, and—maybe most excitingly—The Batman: Part II in 2028. For now? Spidey is king.
