Ethereum Developers Propose Post-Quantum Staking Contract Upgrade Maxwell Mutuma | usagoldmines.com

TLDR

  • Ethereum developers proposed a new deposit contract designed to support a future shift toward post-quantum cryptography.
  • The plan would replace the current Merkle-tree-based system with execution requests linked to EIP-7685.
  • Developers aim to reduce long-term dependence on BLS-based staking mechanisms as quantum computing research advances.
  • ETH traded near $2,480, while Binance positioning showed 70.7% of accounts were long.
  • BlackRock’s Ethereum ETF reportedly added about $90.9 million in ETH, supporting institutional demand.

Ethereum developers have introduced a new deposit contract proposal designed to prepare the network’s staking system for future quantum computing risks. The plan would reduce Ethereum’s reliance on current BLS-based mechanisms and give developers more room to adopt post-quantum security tools over time.

The proposal remains under discussion and has not reached final approval. It forms part of Ethereum’s wider effort to update its consensus layer before quantum computers become capable of threatening today’s cryptographic systems.

Ethereum Developers Target Deposit Contract Changes

The new design would replace the current Merkle-tree-based deposit process with execution requests derived from blockchain logs. The approach connects with EIP-7685, which provides a general framework for passing requests from Ethereum’s execution layer to its consensus layer.

Developers want the structure to support future changes without forcing Ethereum to depend permanently on BLS signatures. Those signatures help validators take part in consensus today, but researchers expect powerful quantum computers could eventually break the mathematical systems behind them.

Ethereum developers have already placed post-quantum security on the network’s longer-term roadmap. Research now covers validator signatures, account security, staking operations, and other cryptographic tools that support Ethereum.

The deposit contract proposal addresses one part of that transition. It could give validators a path toward newer security methods while allowing Ethereum to phase out systems that may become weaker as quantum computing advances.

ETH Holds Near $2,480 as Sentiment Stays Bullish

ETH traded near $2,480 during the early hours of August 25 after moving between roughly $2,356 and $2,533 on the one-hour chart. QuantMIntel reported that 70.7% of Binance accounts held long positions, while 61% of Polymarket users expected ETH to reach $2,600 by month-end.

The same data showed traders paying about 10.2% annualized funding to maintain bullish positions. Rising volume on upward candles supported the short-term trend, although crowded long positions could increase selling pressure if ETH loses support near $2,480.

ETF Buying Adds Support to Ethereum Market

Institutional demand also remained part of the market picture. Ash Crypto reported that BlackRock’s spot Ethereum ETF bought about $90.9 million worth of ETH, while total Ethereum ETF inflows reached about $115 million during the reported period.

Lookonchain also reported large leveraged positions from trader Machi, including about 23,350 ETH worth close to $59 million.

ETH therefore entered the session with firm institutional demand, strong long positioning, and continued attention on the proposed post-quantum staking upgrade across the network as research and testing work continues.
