Modern nerd fandom simply doesn’t exist without Star Trek. So as the franchise turns 60 this year, what better way to celebrate than by seeing some classic episodes of the original Star Trek series paired with several iconic (and similarly themed) Star Trek films, in 4K presentations? More than 750 theaters across the US will screen restored 4K presentations of the first four Star Trek films. And each film will play paired with select episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, each making its theatrical debut. This takes place September 4-8, culminating on the actual 60th anniversary date.
On Friday, September 4, Star Trek: The Motion Picture screens with “The Changeling,” the TOS episode that inspired it. On Saturday, September 5, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan will play with “Space Seed.” This is the 1967 episode that famously introduced Ricardo Montalban as Khan. On Sunday, September 6, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock will screen with “Amok Time,” a Spock-centric episode taking place on Vulcan. And on Monday, September 7, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home plays along with perhaps the best episode of TOS, “The City on the Edge of Forever.” This is, of course, because both are epic time-travel stories. On September 8, all four films will play in select AMC, Cinemark, Regal, and Alamo Drafthouse theaters. We’re sure a true die-hard will watch them all on that day.
And as with all cinematic events lately, fans who attend can purchase limited-edition Star Trek popcorn buckets and commemorative drink cups. AMC’s drink toppers will feature one of four “mystery toppers.” These include the classic 1960s TV series Enterprise, and the feature film refit Enterprise. Even cooler, the Reliant from Star Trek II and the Excelsior from Star Trek III have toppers. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise crew who started it all.
