It is still hard to believe that The Boys is over. Five seasons of blood, gore, bad words, plot twists, and some seriously diabolical behavior went by faster than A-Train. Character deaths, heartbreaking moments, and moral spirals kept us locked in for seven years of fun. While The Boys’ finale was divisive among fans, most agree that it is one of the best shows in the last couple of decades. That makes The Boys seasons incredibly hard to rank, but guess what? We are gonna do it anyway. Check out our ranking of all five seasons of The Boys, from worst to best.
5. Season 5
We liked season five of The Boys overall, but there are a few reasons why it is at the bottom of our list. Compared to previous seasons of relatively consistent pacing, this one did not match that same energy. A bit too much of the season was focused on Soldier Boy and calling back to Stormfront to set up their Vought Rising spinoff versus spending time with the main supe and Boys ensembles as their arcs came to an end. Through no fault of its own, the show felt less like satire and more like an exaggerated mirror of our bleak reality, which isn’t quite as entertaining to watch.
We got a few big deaths for some characters and some satisfying endings for others, but a lot of it felt rushed and underbaked. And, the final showdown that fans have been waiting for between Billy Butcher and Homelander felt far too contained and fleeting. Yes, we all know that Prime Video wasn’t going to drop Avengers: Doomsday money on a Boys fight scene. But it still begged to be more expansive and for Homelander’s ugliness to lash out among people like it never had before, which would have made his death even sweeter. Was it a “bad” season? Absolutely not. But it doesn’t hold a candle to previous seasons.
4. Season 4
Season four of The Boys is also not a “bad” season at all either. But the show did start to wear a bit thin on ideas and have a hard time keeping its pacing intact. We got many great things in this season, including an exploration of Homelander’s origins in the most diabolical way. And there were some excellent cast additions too, like Sister Sage and Firecracker, both of whom breathed fresh air into the Seven collective.
However, we also got elements that didn’t come together as well, like the storyline of Butcher and his ghost pal Joe Kessler. One does not bring the great Jeffrey Dean Morgan into the mix to give him a meh role. The tension and division among the Boys collective made for a compelling watch, but it wasn’t as delicious as the first three seasons.
3. Season 1
We will never forget the shock and awe (mostly shock, tbh) that we felt during the show’s first season. The first season of The Boys literally got our hearts racing from the beginning when A-Train ran through Hughie’s lady, splattering her blood and guts all over the road and sidewalk. We knew right then that we were not in for an ordinary ride.
As is customary with pretty much every new show, there was ample time spent establishing this world and its commentary on hero worship and our socioeconomic status at large as well as the main characters. It was the anti-MCU before we began to feel fatigue, offering an interesting counter to that universe. It established a firm foundation for what would come, and things skyrocketed from there, especially in the next two seasons.
2. Season 2
It was incredibly hard to figure out which season of The Boys would take the top spot in our ranking. Season two takes things up a big notch with the introduction of Stormfront, a character who really struck a chord with viewers in the most shocking ways.
This season fires off a string of excellent episodes and sets the tone for the show’s swift pacing and character development. Shocking moments abound, but not just for the sake of stirring the audience. It all builds the story towards a season finale that is truly mindblowing. Season one had our curiosity, but season two truly commanded our attention.
1. Season 3
The third season of The Boys is fire. New elements like Temp V come into the fold, which causes division and change among the Boys in ways that forever shift their dynamic. Soldier Boy comes into the fold to give some history and depth to Vought. The character became a fan-favorite for good reason, with a barrage of sick one-liners and a gruff, good ole boys type of attitude that complimented Homelander’s “weak man who is desperate for power and love” persona. The Boys collective continues to grow on an individual level, from MM grappling with his past to Annie finally leaving the Seven to Kimiko and Frenchie’s budding romance. And we get the foundation for A-Train’s redemptive arc, which is one of the best in the series.
The Boys’ third season also provides both satire and poignant commentary on addiction, redemption, sexuality, and family. And who can forget the wildest episode in the franchise so far with “Herogasm,” which is seared into our brains, unfortunately. Heartbreaking loss and a final fight scene that is godly along with a tease of the growing power of supes in America are the cherries on top that make this one the best one overall.
