Connecticut Law Firm Bookkeeper Admits Stealing Over $750,000 Using Fake Checks and Rental Cash Daily Hodl Agent | usagoldmines.com

A Connecticut law firm bookkeeper has admitted to embezzling more than three-quarters of a million dollars by issuing fraudulent checks and diverting cash from rental properties.

The 58-year-old Ellington resident entered her plea Tuesday in New Haven federal court, reports CT Insider.

She worked as office manager and bookkeeper at the Hartford firm and used its software to create hundreds of fake checks payable to herself from around 2010 through 2022.

Prosecutors said she forged the firm owner’s signature on the checks before depositing them into her personal account and altered bookkeeping records to hide the activity.

She also took approximately $176,000 in cash rental payments from properties owned by the firm owner and concealed those thefts as well.

In addition to the fraud, she pleaded guilty to tax evasion after failing to report the income and skipping tax filings for multiple years.

The defendant agreed to repay $753,838 in restitution to the law firm and nearly $226,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest to the IRS.

She remains free on a $40,000 bond ahead of her December sentencing hearing.
