Hunter Biden is set to debut a cryptocurrency called LAPTOP this Wednesday, adopting the name of the computer that sparked significant political turmoil in recent history.
Biden unveiled the digital asset on X, the social media platform, describing it as symbolizing “resilience, redemption, and recovery.” He positioned the initiative as reclaiming a controversy that had been weaponized against him.
“They weaponized the laptop against me. I’ve transformed it into a digital asset,” Biden stated.
Token Allocation Breakdown
The complete supply totals 1 billion tokens. Community airdrops will account for 20% of this amount. When the token goes live, 10% becomes claimable via a portal operated by Phoenix Veritas Foundation, the managing entity. The foundation will distribute the other 10% at a later date based on its own timeline.
Airdrop eligibility extends to two distinct groups. Investors who experienced financial losses on Donald Trump’s TRUMP memecoin will claim 2% of the total supply. Those subscribed to Biden’s newsletter, titled “Where’s Hunter?”, will receive 8%.
Biden directly targeted the TRUMP token, highlighting that roughly 1 million wallet addresses collectively lost $3.8 billion. He labeled the project a “grift.”
An additional 30% of LAPTOP’s supply connects to 30 political events occurring in reality, with many linked to Polymarket prediction platforms. When a forecasted event materializes, associated tokens are permanently removed from circulation. When predictions fail, corresponding tokens transfer to charitable organizations. Beyond these mechanics, 50 million tokens are unconditionally designated for charity.
Market Response
The project has encountered resistance from various corners of the industry. Kraken, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange platform, removed a promotional message following negative feedback from its trading community.
Andrew Callaghan, a video journalist whose followers were slated for an airdrop allocation, publicly separated himself from the venture.
Jesse Pollak, who founded Base—the Coinbase-developed blockchain hosting LAPTOP—stated his organization made a “conscious decision” to avoid designing or marketing the token. He emphasized Base maintains no partnership arrangement with the project.
The founding team, which includes Biden, receives 30% of supply with a six-month lock-up followed by 24 months of gradual vesting. Liquidity provisions consume 10%, while the foundation treasury holds 5% for operational expenses.
Biden explicitly stated that purchasers shouldn’t anticipate anyone working to boost the token’s market value. “LAPTOP isn’t just about owning something, it’s about saying something,” he explained.
The laptop at the center of this project first emerged publicly in 2019 when Biden abandoned it at a repair facility in Delaware. Content recovered from the device subsequently became evidence presented during his 2024 federal firearms conviction.
