Federal prosecutors have accused six people of trying to steal more than $5 million from Twin Cities banks and credit unions.
A grand jury indicted Willie Roy Turner Jr., Marc Anderson, Billy Ray Cameron Jr., Devontay Colbert, Dontae Williams and Takiya Shemwell, reports KIMT, citing U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen.
Prosecutors say the group tried to deposit stolen business checks worth more than $5.1 million and took more than $1.5 million.
Five of them allegedly opened fake or unauthorized accounts in the names of those businesses, used fake IDs and deposited checks stolen from the mail.
Shemwell worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago. Prosecutors say she stole the checks and sold them to Turner Jr. and Cameron Jr.
The counts include conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit mail fraud. The mix varies by defendant.
