It appears Microsoft has finally decided to give Windows 11 a true, full-fledged dark mode. That’s according to Windows Latest, which discovered this by taking a closer look at the new experimental builds of Windows 11.

Windows Latest says it’ll soon be possible for Windows 11 to switch automatically between light and dark modes, depending on requirements and the selected application. Until now, this has only been possible using Microsoft PowerToys or certain third-party programs.

The absence of a true auto-switching light/dark mode in Windows 11 has been one of its biggest criticisms for years. Although Microsoft hasn’t yet officially announced anything, the signs are promising.

Why the new Dark Mode matters

With the new Dark Mode, it’ll apparently be possible to schedule when Windows 11 switches between dark and light modes. The actual trigger can be based on the day-night cycle outside (relative to your current location), fixed times of day, or your planned usage times.

There are several advantages. It’s more convenient since Dark Mode will toggle automatically, without the user having to do anything. When Dark Mode is active, the system uses less power as it doesn’t need to increase the screen brightness as high. Dark Mode is also easier on the eyes and may help to prevent eye strain, migraines, and/or headaches.

However, it’s still unclear exactly when the new feature will be officially rolled out. A release later this year is possible, maybe as early as October to coincide with the launch of Windows 11 26H2.
