According to data shared today by major Bitcoin developer Christine Kim, quantum computers are advancing rapidly and therefore could make asymmetric cryptography powerless after 2030. The risk is prompting digital networks to enforce swift, stringent security measures to counter the threat.   

As it stands, quantum computing is becoming a major risk factor for crypto security. Market data projects that quantum computers could break the cryptography protecting today’s top blockchain networks, such as Bitcoin and several others, by 2030.

Why Bitcoin launches quantum-resistant plan   

This shows why Bitcoin developers aren’t leaving security to chance or assumptions. Today, they published a Bitcoin post-quantum security roadmap to make the blockchain infrastructure quantum-resistant. The core team, led by Christine Kim, has consolidated years of widespread research into a well-structured answer to the quantum computing threat.

Today, the team released a post-quantum security roadmap detailing BIP-360, plus SHRINCS, plus Lifeboat, and Dropkick as crucial, coordinated interventions that offer a comprehensive solution to the long-term risk. The post-quantum security roadmap aims to proactively protect against potential threats quantum computing could pose to the blockchain. The plan focuses on providing end-to-end security for the blockchain infrastructure, validators, private states, and wallets.

Deadline for quantum-resistant encryption migration

Today, Bitcoin developers published their proposed roadmap highlighting key priorities for the layer-1 network to accomplish quantum resistance (by December 2029) across data layers, consensus, and execution. This timeline coincides with phased migration plans from institutions including Microsoft, Cloudflare, and Google.

Recently, the above organizations set December 2029 as the deadline, expecting digital networks to transition to post-quantum cryptography. The announcement has recently drawn increased scrutiny of protocols that still rely on elliptic-curve signatures.

As a result, on 31 August, XRP unveiled its four-phase security framework aiming for completion by 2028. Last week, on September 9, Ethereum released its post-quantum security framework, aiming to become quantum-resistant by December 2029. Today, BTC followed suit and published a coordinated post-quantum cryptography transition strategy.
