A Pennsylvania man is suing JPMorgan Chase after the bank froze his account, pulled nearly $12,000 out of it and refused to put it back.
Jim Serena says his friend Peter McNeal sent him four Zelle payments totaling about $12,000, reports WTAE.
Then McNeal mistakenly told Chase the payments were unauthorized.
Chase froze Serena’s account and sent the money back to McNeal.
Both men later gave Chase notarized affidavits saying the transfers were real, but the bank refused to return the $12,000.
McNeal later closed his Chase accounts and took the money with him.
Serena lives on Social Security. He moved those deposits to Citizens Bank so he would not be left with nothing.
He says the stress put him in the emergency room.
“What’s right is right and what’s wrong is wrong… The documentation shows that everything was legitimate, authorized; he withdrew his complaint, and they’re still trying to penalize me for something that was authorized and legitimate.”
Serena filed a federal lawsuit in Pittsburgh in June and is seeking up to $900,000.
Chase has asked the court to throw the case out. It says it followed its account agreement after McNeal first claimed the transfers were unauthorized.
