A few days ago, Google quietly announced that it’ll be allowing certain Chromebook models to upgrade from ChromeOS to Googlebook OS at some point in the future. The announcement was made via a new support page, spotted by The Verge.
Googlebook OS is the company’s newest laptop operating system, which is being launched alongside its new lineup of Googlebook laptops. As of now, the first Googlebooks will come from manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
However, exactly which models will be included in the upgrade, or how it will be carried out, remains unclear. Google states that more information will follow. Chromebooks that don’t receive the upgrade will still receive regular updates until the end of their standard support period.
The operating system combines elements of ChromeOS with Android technology and is tightly integrated with the Gemini AI assistant. That said, our first-hand impressions show that Googlebooks are phone-first, not AI-first and their most compelling feature is actually native support for fully isolated Linux environments.
