There’s a ton of new stuff introduced in Arcana Unleashed, but what I’m most excited for are the added subclasses. D&D 5.5e has oft struggled with martial classes falling behind in the general meta, but some of these new subclasses will help level the playing field, as well as expanding many possibilities for existing Wizarding classes. Let’s do a basic overview of our range of Arcana Unleashed subclass options:
1. Vestige Patron Warlock

Alright, so I’m starting out with one my personal favorites. There are dead gods out there that sure would love to be less dead, and need some loyal Warlocks to have any hope of accomplishing that goal. Choose to serve one of these gods, and they’ll become a Vestige that tails along at your side. I love a good familiar, I’m a simple person. Vestige Patron Warlock’s are primarily companion-based, with players able to choose between customizable Celestial, Undead, or Fiend companions, depending on which dead/dying god they choose to worship.
Your little buddies will be useful in combat and for the regular tasks you might assign to a familiar, and they level along with you. This subclass diversifies the Warlock class, allowing for a range of Cleric spells, as well as domain-based spells and and aura effects at higher levels. You can even temporarily transform yourself into a summoned creature, which is pretty sick.
2. Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk

Punching stuff is great. Magically enhanced punching? Even better. This gish class essentially is a spell-casting monk, a dangerous combination in the right hands. This is a wisdom-based subclass adopting a lot of spells and cantrips from the Sorceror class, though there’s no school restrictions on the spells the Mystic Arts Monks can use. This is an extremely flexible class, and allows players to imbue cantrips and spells directly into their physical attacks.
3. Conjurer Wizard

An updated subclass that first appeared in the 2014 Player’s Handbook, Conjurer Wizards are back and better than ever, with greater access to Conjuring spells! Imagine that. This 2026 rework also allows you to maintain Concentration while casting spells, even if an enemy lands a hit on you during an encounter. Players will also get to use a new version of Benign Transposition, with greater battle utility than its previous iteration.
4. Arcane Domain Cleric

Originally introduced in Sword Coast’s Adventurer’s Guide, this new modified 5.5e version has some significantly expanded abilities. Arcane Domain Clerics have a few new spells added to their retinue, such as Bigby’s Hand and Magic Missile. This subclass can also learn two Wizard cantrips, and at 3rd Level, they gain proficiency in Arcana and one other skill of their choice. (Damn!) These Clerics can also modify spells mid-combat, with Fortify Spell and Tenacious Spell, allowing them to either subtract 1d6 from an enemy’s saving throw, or a spell’s target gains 2d8 + Cleric Level temporary HP.
5. Arcane Archer

A well-loved D&D 5e subclass from 2017’s Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Arcane Archers return with even more variety in their skill set. As long as you’re willing to go the path less traveled for fighters and invest heavily in Intelligence, this subclass can make your character an incredible asset in and out of battle. The Arcane Archer’s world really opens up at Level 7, when Magical Ammunition becomes available. This offers a spread of options, like unlocking doors from a distance, or turning your bow into a grappling hook. You can shoot an arrow trailing a rope up to 120 feet, which allows your party to reach (or escape!) areas they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to.
6. Enchanter Wizard

Another subclass from the 2014 Player’s Handbook, this 5.5e rework offers some more versatility for Enchanter Wizards. Enchanter Wizards now get Intelligence bonuses on Charisma checks. This new feature is “Enchanting Talker.” Get it? ‘Cause…oh never mind. In addition, Enchanters can now split their enchanting spells between multiple targets, allowing for a wider range of options in and out of combat.
7. Necromancer Wizard

The third entrant from the 2014 Player’s Handbook, this newfangled 5.5e version of the Necromancer Wizard primarily has had its spellbook redesigned. Cast spells can now grant things like Necrotic resistance and temporary hit points, buffing up the typical low-Constitution Necromancer. Summon Undead can now be cast at no cost, a bit of a game-changer in terms of magical resource management. There’s also a few new abilities available at higher levels, like teleporting away and regaining HP when near death.
Transmuter Wizard

The Transmuter Wizard has been updated from its previous version and several sweeping improvements have been made. Once an underwhelming class, the Transmuter Wizard has been reworked, now with more raw power and more spectacle. The Transmuter Stone (basically a Transmuter Wizard’s personal philosopher’s stone) is now earned at Level 3 rather than 6, and its abilities have been buffed. Besides that, Transmuter’s can now upcast their spells by a level, and some of the classic Transmuter spells have been upgraded. Shapechanger, for instance, can now be used on much higher CR creatures. This definitely makes the Transmuter class far more appealing in 5.5e!
Arcana Unleashed has a little something for all D&D players, whether you’re looking to mix some magic with your martial or just play a better version of your favorite type of Wizard. There’s plenty to explore, and the subclasses are just the tip of the iceberg!
