Fresh off of refreshing Carrie for a modern audience, Mike Flanagan is ready to do the same for The Exorcist franchise. The horror master is bringing demons big to the big screen with the latest entry in the legendary series. And the first images from The Exorcist: Martyrs starring Scarlett Johansson tease a terrifying tale unlike any Exorcist story we’ve seen before.
Esquire has the first look at what nightmares await in Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist: Martyrs. The film features Johansson as NYPD homicide Detective and single mom Julie Miller. After a lifetime of pursuing bad guys, she encounters a serial killer (John Leguizamo) who seems to embody an evil spoken of in the Bible. He’s known as Father Sunday because he recreates the brutal murders of Catholic saints. The true terror begins after his execution, which Miller attends, goes wrong. When the murders then resume, Miller and her partner (played by Sasha Calle) must continue investigating what Esquire describes as “as a crime procedural, even if it is building a case against a wickedness that is otherworldly.”
If that sounds like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs combined with The Exorcist, it should. That’s exactly how Flanagan describes it. But while there might be connections with the original movie (which, besides the demonic possession, we won’t learn about until we see it), he also says he “wanted very much for this [movie] to stand on its own two legs, encapsulating a brand-new plotline with brand-new characters.”

The Exorcist: Martys also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor. He plays Father William, a priest who suffers from a “crisis of faith” years after overseeing the strange execution. Laurence Fishburne also plays a priest “familiar with ancient rituals. He gets involved when the killings start to get too close to Detective Miller’s personal life.” His involvement will put the lives of Miller’s mother (Diane Lane) and her 12-year-old son (Jacobi Jupe).
These first images promise a story that looks as creepy as it sounds. We’ll find out what went wrong during Father Sunday’s execution when The Exorcist: Martyrs comes to theaters March 12, 2027.
