The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was the first book published in C.S. Lewis’ iconic The Chronicles of Narnia series. Ultimately, though, it wasn’t the first book he wanted fans to read. Five years later, he released a prequel novel, The Magician’s Nephew. It’s the tale of how the fantasy realm came into existence. And that’s where writer-director Greta Gerwig is beginning her big-screen adaptation of Lewis’ beloved series. She’s taking viewers to where it all began with the first live-action adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew. And her movie’s own journey has officially begun with its first trailer. You can watch The Magician’s Nephew‘s trailer below.
Netflix’s first look at what Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women) has previously described as a ’60s, David Bowie-inspired rock non-musical certainly fits that description. This vibrant first trailer for The Magician’s Nephew is full of bright colors and rock and roll. It also promises to take viewers on a journey from a dark and drab England to the birth of a different dimension where Meryl Streep’s Aslan—who we see come to life among the cosmos at the end of this trailer—will rule. But as we see in brief snippets, evil will also come to the land.
The Magician’s Nephew also stars David McKenna, Beatrice Campbell, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan,Ciarán Hinds, Daniel Craig, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma. It will also feature an original score by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
While some fans of the books have worried Gerwig’s adaptation, which moves the story up many decades, might not stay true to Lewis’ book, this trailer for The Magician’s Nephew certainly captures the awe and fantastic sense of wonder of the novel. But we’ll all find out if that’s true early next year. Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will arrive in both IMAX and regular theaters on Feb. 12, 2027. It will then debut on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
