In early 2020, The Simpsons’ Hank Azaria said he and the show had made a decision they all felt good about. He would never again voice Kwik-E-Mart owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon. The announcement came after years of backlash following comedian Hari Kondabolu’s 2017 documentary The Problem With Apu. Even before Azaria officially stepped away from the role, Apu has appeared in Springfield without speaking. Until now. The beloved character regained his voice by finding a new performer, voice actor Sunil Malhotra.
The Simpsons third episode of season 38 brought horror to Springfield with a special “Treehouse of Horror Presents” installment. “The Revenging” saw a mysterious murderous figure haunting the town. Ultimately it turned out to be Apu having a disturbing vision. (Or at least maybe it was a vision….) The episode featured the debut of long-time voice actor Sunil Malhotra (World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Fallout 4) in the role. It was also the first episode for another new cast member Janina Gavankar (The Morning Show). She plays Apu’s wife, Manjula.
The episode, which featured some meta commentary from Homer about Apu’s importance to Springfield, is just the start of the Kwik-E-Mart owner’s vocal return.
Executive producer Matt Selman told Variety Apu and Manjula will once again be active members of the community. “We love this character, and wanted to bring him back in a smart, Simpsons-y way that allowed him to evolve,” said Selman. “We’re excited by what Sunil has already brought to the role, and look forward to seeing more of Apu in the future.”
Malhotra also told Variety he wouldn’t have accepted the role if Apu’s return wasn’t handled in a respectful manner. But he said that started with a meeting he requested with Selman and co-executive producer Cesar Mazariegos. Malhotra said, “It was the beginning of a deeply collaborative experience that I hope is equally satisfying for longtime fans of The Simpsons and for other South Asian kids who, like me, stopped watching at some point along the way.”
And that’s what really matters. It’s not just that Apu found a new voice. It’s that he found the right one.
