Joe Manganiello Reveals Deathstroke Plot for DCEU Batman Film Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

When the DCEU was in full swing (or as close to “full swing” as it ever got), there were serious plans for Ben Affleck to write, direct, and star in a solo Batman movie. And Joe Manganiello was going to star as Deathstroke, the film’s primary antagonist. Ben Affleck scrapped the movie after, in his words, hitting a “career low” as Batman in Justice League. But thanks to Manganiello’s new memoir Bloodlines (via Entertainment Weekly), the former True Blood and Magic Mike star has revealed details of the canceled film for the first time. And to us, it sounds like it had the potential to be a truly great Batman movie that is unlike any we’ve seen before.

According to the actor, Affleck described his Batman movie as “a superhero version of David Fincher’s The Game.” The plot would have shown the deadly mercenary Deathstroke, a.k.a. Slade Wilson, “dismantle Batman’s entire life” after being led to believe Batman murdered his son. In the comics, Deathstroke has two sons. The eldest, Grant Wilson, tried to emulate his father and became the mercenary Ravager. His younger son, a mutant named Joseph Wilson, became a member of the Teen Titans as Jericho. In the comics, both sons met untimely ends. Deathstroke appeared in live-action on TV in Arrow and Titans, but he has never been in a movie, aside from a cameo.

A shocking moment in the film would have seen Deathstroke killing Commissioner Gordon (presumably played again by J.K. Simmons), kidnapping Bruce Wayne’s butler and father figure Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons), and breaking into the Batcave. Manganiello revealed that the film would have featured an incredible action set piece about halfway through. In this scene, “Deathstroke would nearly kill both Batman and Batgirl before they would both escape via an aboveground train.” This is the first confirmation that Batgirl would have been a character in the film, presumably the Barbara Gordon iteration.

Nerdist’s Take: Joe Manganiello Would Have Been a Perfect Deathstroke, and Maybe Still Could Be

The big action finale of this Batman film, according to Manganiello, would have been a “climactic one-on-one showdown through the streets of Gotham.” According to Affleck, this battle would have drawn inspiration from the fight sequence from the Batman: Arkham Asylum video game. Sadly, the only version of Deathstroke that Manganiello ever played was in a cameo in Justice League. But we’re all still waiting for a proper live-action version on the big screen. A team-up movie with Batman villain Bane has been announced, but no casting has been decided. Honestly, the comics usually portray Deathstroke as an older man, so Manganiello could absolutely still play the role. And we’d love to see it.
