Every few years, a new YA novel series becomes an almost overnight pop culture phenomenon. We saw it with Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Divergent. Now, the romatasy YA novel series of the moment is Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, which came out in 2023. Two follow-up books have come out since, Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. Now, the fantasy series is coming to live-action on Prime Video, and we have our first major casting announcement from Amazon MGM Studios. Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya have been cast as the series leads Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson, respectively.
For this series, Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House) is serving as showrunner with Lisa Joy directing the pilot. Superstar Michael B. Jordan is also a hands-on executive producer. In Fourth Wing, Violet Sorrengail’s mother forces her to enter the brutal world of Basgiath War College. Violet joins several hundred candidates hoping to become elite dragon riders. Violet endures gruelling quests and competitions, trying to avoid the powerful rider, Xaden Riorson, from killing her.
Of the casting, Yarros said, “I’m so grateful to our producing and casting team for conducting a thorough, worldwide search to find Violet and Xaden. It will be incredibly exciting to see these talented actors, Esther and Emilio, bring our beloved characters to life on screen.”
Nerdist’s Take: With Three Books in the Fourth Wing Series, and Two More Coming, We Have the Making of a Multi-Season Hit for Prime Video
In a statement, Amazon MGM Studios’ Peter Friedlander said, “Few stories have inspired the kind of passionate, worldwide fandom that Rebecca Yarros has built with Fourth Wing, and we know just how much Violet and Xaden mean to readers. Esther and Emilio are rare and exceptional talents who bring something truly special to these iconic roles.”
With three books released and two more coming in Yarros’ Empyrean series, we could see as many as five seasons. Prime Video has not revealed a release date for the series, but we wouldn’t expect it before 2028.
