Cordyceps might have destroyed the world of The Last of Us, but it sure had made for a fun(gi) franchise. HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s popular video game series has been a crossover hit. But what new (and also old) horrors still await viewers when they return to that dystopian wasteland? Here’s everything we know about The Last of Us season three so far.
The Last of Us Season 3‘s Plot
The Last of Us season three will continue to adapt The Last of Us Part II video game, specifically Abby’s side of the tale.
HBO’s series, which like the game itself told its story not in chronological order but by bouncing around the timeline, introduced Abby as the daughter of the surgeon Joel killed at the end of season one. The second season ended by going back a few days before Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) cornered Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her friends in an old theater. It teased how and why Abby was not present for the battle between the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites. Season three will center Abby’s point of view just like the video game.
Even with Abby becoming the main character of the show, showrunner Craig Mazin has said season three will also feature plenty of other flashbacks to other characters, including many dead ones. “Next season we probably will have a lot more flexibility [to tell side stories],” he said. “Maybe a side trip to do Joel and Tommy terrorizing the countryside, we’ll never know. I wouldn’t have guessed we’d have a short story about Joel’s dad before we wrote the season. [Tommy’s] been in war, and we also know that for some time, he and Joel were doing some pretty bad things. So there is the potential of seeing this other side of Tommy, and that is now about him delivering on his understood promise to his brother.”
Abby might have killed Joel in season two, but that doesn’t mean he won’t appear in season three. This next round will also further explore in greater detail why the WLF and Seraphites are in a violent battle.
The Last of Us Season 3‘s Cast
Bella Ramsey returns as the Cordyceps-immune Ellie, as does Isabela Merced as Dina. While the show did not reveal whether Abby killed Gabriel Luna’s Tommy Miller or not (and the series often make changes from the video games), he will return at minimum via flashbacks. As will Pedro Pascal as Joel, who despite being very famously dead will be still appear, according to Craig Mazin. Kaitlyn Dever will take over as the show’s main character when she returns as the vengeful Abby. Jeffrey Wright will also be back as WLF leader Isaac Dixon. Tati Gabrielle (Nora), Ariela Barer (Mel), and Spencer Lord (Owen) are moving up to series regulars.
Other stars who could return include Rutina Wesley as Maria, Tommy’s wife, and Robert John Burke as Seth. Because the show is jumping around the timeline over many years, we also expect to see Young Mazino reprise his role as Jesse.
Season three newcomers include Jason Ritter and Patrick Wilson. Ritter is joining as Hanley, a WLF soldier named Hanley. Wilson will play Jerry, Abby’s late father who Joel killed to save Ellie. (Wilson did not play the part in season one.) Also heading to the wasteland are Ian Alexander and John Goodman as Paco and Joey. They are original characters for the show, a “friendly duo” that calls themselves the “Heroes of the Highway.” Alexander, a 25-year-old transgender man, voiced Lev, a transgender teen, in The Last of Us Part II.
Two major roles in The Last of Us Part II went to Michelle Mao and Kyriana Kratter. They are playing Seraphite siblings, with Mao as Yara and Kratter as her transgender brother Lev. Li Jun Li will play their mom, Miriam. Fans of the game know why they will be among the most important additions to the show and Abby’s story.
Clea DuVall will also play a Seraphite and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. is taking over as WLF member Manny after Danny Ramirez left the show. Peter Sarsgaard will serve as a leader of the Seraphites known as Amon. As will Laura Bailey who plays Elizabeth. She was the voice of Abby in the video game and also played a nurse in season one of HBO’s show.
There will also once again be plenty of terrifying fungus zombies.
Behind the Scenes
Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, the series co-showrunner through the first two seasons, announced he was stepping away from HBO’s adapation shortly after the season two finale. He later revealed Naughty Dog did not have any creative role or input into season three, which is now led by showrunner Craig Mazin alone.
Season three will also serve as the final year of HBO’s adaptation. However, with Naughty Dog promising future video games releases maybe that will change some day. That is if the two companies even want to work together anymore…
Filming began in British Columbia in March 2026 and took a lengthy hiatus during the summer. Shooting is expected to wrap in November. While HBO has not announced how many episodes it will run, previous comments from Mazin and Druckmann indicate it will be the longest yet. Certainly longer than season two’s 7-episode run, which was two shorter than season one.
The Last of Us Season 3 Release Date
The Last of Us season three will debut on HBO in 2027. While HBO has not shared an official release, some reports suggest it will have a spring debut. That’s also when season two premiered in 2025.
