Even though the second film is still several months away, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are so high on what they’ve seen for Mortal Kombat II, they’ve already put a third film into pre-production. The studio announced this news at New York Comic Con 2025, according to a report coming via Deadline. After writing and executive producing the second chapter, Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) is coming back to write the third film. The first trailer for the upcoming sequel garnered 107 million global views within 24 hours back in July. It set an all-time record for a red-band trailer.
Lewis Tan starred in the 2021 film as Cole Young, an MMA fighter fighting Outworld enemies in a battle to save reality. The first film, a reboot of the ’90s movie based on the iconic video games, arrived at the height of the pandemic. Nevertheless, Mortal Kombat became HBO Max’s biggest film launch at the time. It also grossed $84 million at the box office, off a $55 million production budget, making it a hit. New Line announced a sequel shortly after. Yet it’s taken nearly five years to release, as production halted during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
The returning cast for Mortal Kombat II includes Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raiden), and Mehcad Brooks (Jax). Also returning are Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), and Max Huang as Kung Lao. Joining the cast for the sequel are The Boys’ Karl Urban, along with Tati Gabrielle. Mortal Kombat II currently has a release date of May 15, 2026. New Line Cinema recently moved it from its October 2025 release. There is no proposed release date for the third film. Hopefully, Mortal Kombat fans won’t have as large a gap between chapters this time.
