Crocs into LEGO feet, a basement into a Gamestop, three different gaming consoles into one—we’ve talked about a lot of amazing transformations here before. And here’s another one to add to the pile. Before the world bore witness to all these high-speed computers and fancy electronics, there were typewriters. Arguably, typewriters are the pioneers of the modern-day keyboard. But this YouTuber has taken an old typewriter and transformed it into a gaming computer. Well, sort of.
The video offers an impressively thorough breakdown of how an antiquated typing machine can transform into a functional gaming device. The creator essentially redesigns each component from scratch, fixes up the original keyboard so that it functions like a computer keyboard, and fits the PC screen on top of the paper slide. The final result is a computer screen that slides down the arm with each “click clack” of the keyboard. If you watch the video, you might (like me) have some thoughts.
Don’t get me wrong, the idea of combining a typewriter with a gaming computer is pretty cool. But to put it bluntly, the final design is… kinda disappointing? The thumbnail is of a screen, lit up and set to Minecraft, sitting atop a typewriter keyboard. That’s a bit misleading. In actuality, the video leaves us with no actual gameplay, just a PC fastened on top of the arm… with duct tape. I’m choosing to give Prototype, the account on which this video was posted, the benefit of the doubt. I have faith the vision will come together in later parts (which we can assume are coming since the creator mentions it at the end of the video).
At the time of posting, “Part 1” is the only video up on the channel. And we do hope to get more soon, because seeing a working typewriter/PC hybrid would be awesome. Despite not having the most satisfying ending, the video is altogether pretty entertaining. What wild ideas will the creative minds of the world come up with next?
