Although Anne Rice was mostly famous for her supernatural fiction about vampires and witches, she also wrote straightforward historical fiction. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, one of those novels, 1982’s Cry to Heaven, is about to get a film adaptation, directed by Tom Ford. And it will star iconic singer Adele in her acting debut. The novel takes place in the world of 18th-century Italian castrati singers. Its main characters are a maestro castrato and a young aristocrat forced into castration to pursue fame as a singer. In that era, castrati singers were among the most famous performers in the world, akin to pop stars today. We’re very curious to see how Anne Rice’s Cry to Heaven will come to life as a movie.
The Cry to Heaven movie has a star-studded cast, including Nosferatu co-stars Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, along with Ciarán Hinds, George MacKay, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Paul Bettany, and Owen Cooper. Also starring in the film are Daniel Quinn-Toye, Hunter Schafer, Josephine Thiesen, Theodore Pellerin, Daryl McCormack, Cassian Bilton, Hauk Hannenmann, and Lux Pascal. Yes, that’s Pedro Pascal’s younger sister we see starring in Cry to Heaven. Thandiwe Newton also stars, which is fitting, as one of her earliest roles was in Interview with the Vampire, where she succumbs to Brad Pitt’s vampiric bite.
Anne Rice’s Cry to Heaven movie is already in preproduction in London and Rome, with filming set to begin in mid-January. The film will debut in theaters in fall 2026. Currently, AMC owns the rights to all of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and Mayfair Witches books in perpetuity. But many of Rice’s other novels are just waiting for a proper adaptation. Another one of Anne Rice’s early historical novels, The Feast of All Saints, did receive a television mini-series in the 2000s. But it could use a modern update. One of Rice’s most popular series, the erotic s/m Sleeping Beauty trilogy, will likely never get a proper adaptation. But that’s perhaps for the best, as no filmmaker would dare adapt it properly. We’ll see if this Cry to Heaven Anne Rice adaptation starts a trend at the movies.
