Adobe Acrobat remains one of the most widely used PDF editors and one of the priciest. Given the cost of upgrading from Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader, it’s worth familiarizing yourself with what you get with Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro.
At the time of writing, Standard costs $24.99 month-to-month or $14.99 a month with an annual plan billed monthly (or $179.88 prepaid for the year), while Pro costs $29.99 month-to-month or $19.99 a month with an annual plan billed monthly (or $239.88 prepaid for the year). Both include the desktop software, access to Adobe Document Cloud services for storing and sharing files, and tools to sign documents, request e-signatures, and track responses. The difference comes down to a handful of advanced features and workflow tools that may make one plan a better fit than the other.
Acrobat Standard vs. Acrobat Pro: How they’re similar
It’s easiest to start with how Acrobat Standard and Pro are similar, because many of the most-used features are available in both versions. Both Standard and Pro let you create PDFs in a few common ways: converting documents and images to PDF, creating PDFs from virtually any application that prints, combining multiple documents and file types into a single PDF, and turning webpages into PDFs that preserve links.
Both versions also support core PDF editing and organization. You can add, delete, reorder, and extract pages; edit text and images; add page numbering, bookmarks, headers, and watermarks; and export PDFs to Microsoft Office formats and common image types. Both plans also include security basics such as password protection—along with tools to remove hidden information in a document before sharing.
Acrobat Standard and Pro both support sharing and collaboration. You can share documents as an email attachment or as a Document Cloud link, add comments and markups, fill and send forms, request e-signatures, and track activity as recipients view and respond.
Acrobat Standard vs. Acrobat Pro:: How they’re different
Once you move beyond the basics, a few key differences between Acrobat Standard and Pro may influence which plan makes more sense for you.
Searchable scanned documents
For many users, the deciding factor is whether Acrobat can turn scanned paper documents into searchable, editable PDFs. That’s a Pro feature; Acrobat Pro includes optical character recognition (OCR) for converting scans into editable text so you can search, copy, and edit content instead of retyping it.
Enhanced editing
Acrobat Standard covers most everyday editing tasks, but Pro adds several advanced tools geared toward heavier document workflows. One of the big ones is redaction, which lets you permanently remove sensitive visible text and graphics from a document before sharing it. Standard includes more basic security tools—like password protection and removing hidden information—but it doesn’t offer the same redaction workflow.
Pro also supports features you’re less likely to need unless you work in specific fields: adding audio/video and interactive objects to PDFs, and Bates numbering for legal documents.
Document comparison
If you send a lot of documents out for review, you need a reliable way to confirm what changed. Acrobat Pro includes a PDF comparison tool that highlights differences between two versions and can generate a summary of changes.
Operating system support
Acrobat runs on both Windows and macOS, so the decision usually comes down to features rather than platform support.
Acrobat Standard vs. Acrobat Pro: Which one is right for you?
If your PDF use is limited to creating, editing, and sending documents, Acrobat Standard has more than enough functionality for most people. Acrobat Pro makes more sense if you need advanced tools such as OCR for scanned documents, redaction, or document comparison. If you’re unsure, Standard is a sensible starting point, and you can move up if your workflow demands it.
