Crypto, often criticized for lacking real-world applications, is proving to be a tool for positive change in Tanzania and Kenya. These countries are facing environmental challenges like plastic pollution, which is hitting hard.
These problems are not just local—they’re part of a global crisis. In a world facing climate change and environmental damage, cleaning up is no longer optional. It’s a responsibility we owe future generations. But what if we could also earn crypto while doing it?
That’s where blockchain and ReFi come in. Projects like Aquapurge in Kenya and Chatafisha in Tanzania are blending environmental action with crypto incentives. These projects pay people to clean up plastic and other waste, turning eco-friendly work into a profitable venture.

Aquapurge, led by founder Ibrahim Aziz, is tackling Kenya’s ocean pollution crisis by using its PURGE token ecosystem. Local communities earn crypto rewards for participating in cleanup activities, which can be converted into cash or used in eco-friendly markets. Aziz sees the project as more than just cleaning beaches—it’s about creating sustainable income while protecting the planet.

Crypto Incentives Drive 5,400 kg Cleanup, Boost Local Livelihoods
The early results speak for themselves. According to Cointelegraph, In October 2023, during the Mvureni Beach Cleanup in Diani, participants earned USDC for their efforts, and since then, 23 events have collected over 5,400 kilograms of waste.

The impact goes beyond the environment. By involving local fishermen and small business owners, Aquapurge is helping improve the marine ecosystem. This directly benefits their livelihoods. With cleaner waters, fish populations grow, fishing gear is less damaged, and communities thrive.
