If you had the same visceral reaction reading this headline as I had writing it, then I can only assume we’re on the same page. AI has gone way too far. Five years before his unfortunate passing in 2025, actor Val Kilmer was cast in Coerte Voorhees’s drama As Deep As the Grave. Battling throat cancer at the time, Kilmer never actually made it to the set. A first look image on Wednesday revealed an AI Val Kilmer, set to take the late actor’s spot in the upcoming film. Sigh.

Say it with me: AI should NOT REPLACE actors in film and television. We thought Tilly Norwood was bad enough, but now we’re resurrecting stars from the dead? Please, let’s just let them rest in peace.
Voorhees, the film’s writer and director, explains that he specifically picked Val Kilmer to play Father Fintan in As Deep As the Grave. “He was the actor I wanted to play this role. It was very much designed around him. It drew on his Native American heritage and his ties to and love of the Southwest. I was looking at a call sheet the other day, and we had him ready to shoot. He was just going through a really, really tough time medically, and he couldn’t do it.”
Though Kilmer never made it to set, generative AI made it possible for the director to realize his vision. As Deep As the Grave follows Fintan through various stages of his life. It will have a significant amount of AI Kilmer, both young and old, and even reconstruct his voice, which was left damaged after a tracheal procedure. The decision was made with support from the late actor’s estate and his daughter, Mercedes.
“His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” says Voorhees. “He really thought it was an important story that he wanted his name on. It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay, let’s do this. Despite the fact that some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”

“He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling,” says his daughter, Mercedes. “This spirit is something that we are all honoring within this specific film, of which he was an integral part.”
I suppose it makes it better that Kilmer’s family is in support of the whole thing. Still, it feels icky. If this is the way the world is headed, I don’t even know what to say. For one, it opens up a barrel of questions over the ethics of it all. That, my friends, is a conversation for another day.
