Alex Ross is a modern comic book legend, creating Norman Rockwell-esque art for iconic characters from both DC and Marvel. In fact, Ross illustrated two of each respective publisher’s most epic ’90s stories, Kingdom Come and Marvels. And his artwork featuring portraits of both heroes and villains still adorns DC and Marvel covers to this day. Now, the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, Illinois is opening a new exhibit dedicated to his work, called Alex Ross: Heroes & Villains. Ross has created two new works for this celebration of his art, and updated a classic one, showcasing Superman. The exhibit features over 100 pieces of art, including individual full-size portraits of iconic superheroes and villains, and three life-size murals.

In anticipation of one of this summer’s hottest movies, Ross has recreated and updated his classic Superman painting with brighter colors. This image of the Last Son of Krypton shows him standing stoically, bringing to life what we imagine when we think of Superman. Ross originally painted it back in 1999, and released it as a poster along with several other members of the Justice League.

The first of the two new paintings depicts the Joker, in homage to the art of the late Neal Adams. This is Joker as he appeared in the Bronze Age of Comics, re-embracing his status as a dangerous Batman villain. The second depicts Joker’s partner in crime, Harley Quinn, in an homage to her co-creator, Paul Dini. You can check them both out in our gallery below:

The Dunn Museum Exhibits & Collections Manager, Steve Furnett, had this to say on this celebration of Ross’ iconic artwork:
We wanted to balance out our exhibit and are so excited that Alex took some time this year to create these vibrant new paintings for our Heroes & Villains exhibit. We’re thrilled to share Joker, Harley Quinn, and Superman with all his fans, but there’s nothing like seeing original art up close and in person, so we hope you can make it to the Dunn Museum.
You can view these original paintings in person exclusively at the Dunn Museum exhibit. They will be revealed at the ticketed pre-opening event, A Night with Alex Ross, on Saturday, June 28. You can purchase tickets for the event: LCFPD.org/AlexRoss. The Alex Ross: Heroes & Villains exhibit opens to the public on Sunday, June 29.
