Americans have Elon Musk’s DOGE back in relation to US foreign aid. According to a poll conducted, almost 60% of people agreed that money meant to help people was wasted on corruption or administration fees.
According to thepoll, only 12% did not agree with the US foreign help being seized. This means that the people who are against reducing the burden on America’s taxpayers are not American citizens.
The study proved that American voters don’t like how much the US spends on aid programs. It also found that respondents greatly overestimated how much the US spends on these programs.
More than 20% thought the US spent a fifth of its annual budget on USAID, when in fact, the figure is approximately 1%.
Another 20% thought that between 10% and 20% was spent on humanitarian help. Also, the same number of people thought that the US spent between 5% and 10% on the same. Even with the wrong information most people don’t agree with using their funds to donate.
However, Carly Munnelly, the head of Public First’s US practice said, “The American public supports the principles of aid but they’re just not convinced it has been used effectively […] Across the board, they tend to overestimate how much the US spends on aid, feel that other wealthy countries aren’t providing their fair share, and think too much is lost to waste and corruption.”
Musk has been thorough ever since he became part of President Donald Trump’s cabinet. The billionaire said that the department would be “put through the wood chipper.” Contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars were frozen, and thousands of employees were put on leave. This is with an aim to cut costs.
Musk promised to free 1 trillion dollars. He also said that if costs are not cut the US was at risk of going bankrupt. On the other hand Musk has been accused of saying things that are not true. DOGE’s website has also been found with a vulnerability that it can be edited by anyone. Therefore having American’s support is a breather.
The impact of foreign aid on the US
In the past few weeks, the Trump administration has stopped sending money to other countries. Appointed Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in charge of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), said that the agency’s work will be reviewed.
Getting rid of USAID, which is supported by Congress, would hurt U.S. interests in more than one way. This goes beyond the main goal of U.S. policy, which is to save lives.
In the heart of making America great again, USAID’s efforts use “soft power” to counter Russia’s and China’s actions and attitudes.
This is because they are against the US around the world. As China’s economic and diplomatic influence grows around the world, the US’s support for systems of oversight, accountability, and long-term economic and environmental decisions helps keep China from entangling countries in debt and diplomatic servitude and from controlling key minerals or strategic access points. This is a big concern for the Trump administration when it comes to the Panama Canal.
According to the US non-profit Global Health Council, more than $1BN worth of drugs were donated by drug firms. This also includes vaccines and treatment for malnutrition paid for by the US, have stopped being sent out.
USAID attempts to stop diseases that kill and to protect healthy ecosystems. This helps the economy grow in the long term and stops the spread of infectious diseases that hurt the US citizens and the country. In addition, all of these efforts by USAID help stop the migration flows that the Trump administration is so eager to stop.
The USAID inspector-general also said that because of the funding freeze, nearly $500 million worth of US-grown food and grain was going bad at ports and stores. After that, the Trump government fired the inspector general.
Also, a pressure group called Accountability Lab has found that dozens of partner organizations around the world are about to go bankrupt because of USAID’s cuts.
Some of DOGE’s work at USAID has been put on hold by the court. Some life-saving programs have been exempt from the funding freeze by the Trump administration.
Meanwhile, DOGE is continuing to break up the US Agency for International Development. It is a $40BN agency that was set up decades ago and has offices in more than 100 countries.
