Have you always wished you could transform into any animal you touch? Yes?, Well hello there, Animorphs fan who is about to have their entire day transformed into something very good. A new report says Disney+ is developing an Animorphs TV series with Ryan Coogler and his production company.
According to Variety, Bayan Wolcott (The Summer I Turned Pretty) is writing and executive producing a new television adaptation of Animorphs for 20th Century. Proximity Media’s Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian are also serving as executive producers. As are Scholastic’s Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman. The show is the part of Coogler’s overdeal he signed with Disney, which is also producing his The X-Files reboot.
Animorphs began as a book series from married writers Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. They, along with some ghostwriters, published 54 books from 1996 until 2001. The series follows “five normal kids” who, after coming across a spaceship, gain the power to transform into any animal they touch. And that came in handy since their home planet was threatened by Yeerks, a race of aliens trying to take over Earth.
The novels were just the start, as Disney+’s adaptation won’t even be the first time Animorphs makes its way to the small screen. The first Animorphs show ran for two seasons and 26 episodes from 1998 to 2000. And while a big screen adaptation remained in developmental hell for years, there have also been Animorphs video games and graphic novels.
Plus, those very funny book covers have provided some fantastic meme material.
We do not expect a Ryan Coogler produced Animorphs show to be quite as silly as those covers. Or the original TV show. We still expect it to be a little silly, though. Sure, we’d love to have the ability to transform into any animal. But it would still be funny to see.
