Casting the right people to play real-life figures is maybe the most important in the realm of music biopics. Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen, Angela Bassett as Tina Turner; all banger performances. So Sam Mendes is really not messing around when it comes to casting for his upcoming four-film exploration of the Beatles. We already know who’ll play John, Paul, George, and Ringo. (Harris Dickinson, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, Barry Keoghan, respectively.) Just as important are the women with whom much of their lives were spent. Now we can add Anna Sawai, Saoirse Ronan, Aimee Lou Wood, and Mia McKenna-Bruce to the list.

Sony has announced, as a Halloween treat, the four actresses who’ll portray the just-as-famous wives of the four mop top kids from Liverpool. McKenna-Bruce will star as Maureen (Cox) Starkey, Ronan as Linda (Eastman) McCartney, Sawai as Yoko Ono, and Wood as Pattie Boyd. “Maureen, Linda, Yoko and Pattie are four fascinating and unique figures in their own right – and I’m thrilled that we’ve managed to persuade four of the most talented women working in film today to join this amazing adventure,” said Mendes.
These are some pretty hefty roles if you know your Beatles history. Linda McCartney joined Paul to form the band Wings following the Beatles’ dissolution. Pattie Boyd was the subject of George Harrison’s best songs, specifically “Something,” before divorcing him for mutual friend Eric Clapton, who wrote songs like “Layla” about her. Maureen Starkey was a loyal fan of the band before marrying Ringo and is the person Paul is talking to at the end of “Get Back” when he says “Thanks, Mo.” And Yoko Ono, of course, has spent the better part of 50 years as the scapegoat (wrongly) for the breakup of the Beatles.
All four actresses are beyond acclaimed. Ronan is a four-time Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner. Sawai won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Shogun. Wood is an Emmy Award nominee and BAFTA TV winner. And McKenna-Bruce won a BAFTA.
The Beatles — A Four-Film Cinematic Event will debut in April 2028.
