Severance is one of those shows that twists your brain around until you can’t think straight. And I mean that in the best way. The series, first produced under an “outie” studio for its first two seasons, has officially jumped over to Apple. Apple Studios, after buying the rights from Fifth Season, will produce the show from here-on out. Fifth Season is not out of the picture, though, and will stick around to executive produce. In other exciting news, Severance is now eyeing a summer start for the production of season three.
Severance is ranked as Apple TV’s most watched series of all time, surpassing the wildly popular Ted Lasso during its second season. Apple officially snagged the Emmy-sweeping series from Fifth Season for just short of $70 million. The series is complex, layered, and thrilling—both from a viewing and production standpoint. Now firmly tucked under Apple’s wing, it sets its sights ahead to season three.
We heard the news of Severance’s renewal back in March of 2025. It seems the gears and finally turning as the series floats the idea of a summer start. Although the series is complicated to produce, series’ creatives are hoping to begin shooting this summer, according to an article on Deadline. While some scripts are done, others are still being written. Severance Season Three falls under showrunner Dan Erickson. Ben Stiller will not return to direct.
Will Severance Have a Fourth Season? A Fifth?
According to Erickson and Stiller, Apple seems to be fully on board for a fourth season. It’s pretty much on lock. A fifth season, however? Chances aren’t as likely. Erickson and Stiller have publicly stated that four was always the plan for Severance, so it’s really up to them if they want to take the series further. On the contrary, there have been whispers through the grapevine of possible spin-offs or prequels, which would be exciting in itself. For now, Apple is fully invested and all in on season three.
