It’s been three years now, believe it or not, since James Gunn announced his big DCU slate of projects. One of the films that fans were most excited about when announced was Batman: The Brave and the Bold, which would feature the new DCU Batman, along with Robin who, in this film, was Bruce Wayne’s son Damian. But there’s been little movement on the project since, while Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which is not set in the DCU, is rolling along. Now, via The Hollywood Reporter, we’ve learned that Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson is writing The Brave and the Bold script for DC Studios. It and The Flash director Andy Muschietti may still direct.
According to the report, Hodson has been writing the script since the fall. The story will still focus on Batman discovering he has a tween-age son named Damian, who is a pint-sized assassin raised by the League of Shadows. He has to train the boy out of being a little, petulant killing machine, and become a proper Boy Wonder. The original announcement suggested other Bat-family members might appear. Possibly even Nightwing and Batgirl. If this version of Batman is old enough to have a superhero son, he’s probably had other sidekicks by now.
Hodson has been a favorite at Warner Bros. and DC for some time. She wrote the scripts for both Birds of Prey and The Flash. But while Birds of Prey got decent reviews, critics largely trashed The Flash. Nevertheless, she continues to secure work writing DCU-centric scripts. She wrote a screenplay for a Batman Beyond movie that never saw the light of day. And she also wrote the script for the Batgirl movie that Warner Bros. later shelved. However, her work on the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee received much praise. James Gunn has said that he doesn’t want Brave and the Bold to come out the same calendar year as The Batman – Part II, so the earliest we’d see this movie is 2028. Hopefully, this long development process will pay off.
