Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz Reteaming for MUMMY 4 from Radio Silence Kyle Anderson | usagoldmines.com

What’s the point of even having bingo cards anymore? With franchise moviemaking so full of surprises, who could predict any of it? After the complete debacle of Universal’s floppity flopped Dark Universe and its terrible first outing, 2017’s The Mummy, I was sure we wouldn’t get a new offering any time soon. Leigh Whannell’s down-budget takes on The Invisible Man and, though less successfully, Wolf Man, seemed where the Universal Monsters would go. But no! Universal is trying to run back their biggest latter day success with another attempt at The Mummy with a returning Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

The news, which we saw on The Hollywood Reporter, explains Fraser and Weisz are in talks to reprise their roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and genius librarian Evelyn Carnahan, respectively, for a fourth bite at the bandaged apple. The pair starred in the 1999 hit and its 2001 follow-up, The Mummy Returns. Fraser came back for the third film, 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though Weisz chose not to return.

This new film will be the work of filmmaking team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silence. The collective gave us the supremely entertaining 2019 horror comedy Ready or Not as well as another franchise rebootquel in 2022 and 2023’s Scream and Scream 6. I didn’t like either of those, so hopefully The Mummy will fare better. THR further says the new movie will (smartly) ignore the events of the third movie and simply follow the two Egypt-set films.

This decision may have something to do with Warner Bros. and Blumhouse making their own new film of The Mummy with writer-director Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise). Maybe this will end up as a The Real Ghostbusters situation. That movie is due out April of 2026.

The Mummy, written and directed by Stephen Somers, took elements from the 1932 original—namely the idea of an Egyptian mummy returning to life to seek the descendent of his one true love—and added Indiana Jones-style action set pieces and tomb raiding mysteries. It’s a really fun movie. The second movie is admittedly less exciting, as is the spinoff prequel The Scorpion King starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
