CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – The Cape Girardeau Police Department is upgrading its body cameras and car computers after the city council approved the purchase at Monday night’s session.
The new computers will replace the patrol tablets that were bought in 2019. The laptops will allow officers to move them from patrol vehicles to a docking system at the police station.
Acting Chief Adam Glueck said they were hoping to get another year out of the tablets but they were not holding up as long as they needed.
The body cameras are replacing units bought in 2022. Chief Glueck says the biggest expense of the body cameras is the storage space for the video. The cameras are used whenever an officer has a police interaction.
The City has authorized the purchase of 64 body cameras and 64 laptops for a cost of $525,000.
Also included in the police funds are three K-9 units. Two of the animals will replace the recently retired K-9 units. The third will be a gun detection dog. The city will pay $45,000 for the animals.
The approximately $575,000 for the upgrades and purchases will come from the City’s general fund.
