Over the last several years, Christmas and Halloween decorations have gone from inflatable Santas and ghosts to giant animatronics of pop culture characters. One can usually find these at certain retail giants. But some of these animatronics aren’t exactly theme park worthy. Case in point, the giant Chewbacca animatronic that Home Depot is selling. While it’s an undeniably cool version of the iconic Star Wars Wookiee, when it comes out of the box, it looks a little janky. And some of the accessories? Not so great. So YouTube channel M.M’s Prop Shop decided to give the Home Depot Chewie a makeover, which you can watch below:
The first thing we see in the video is Chewie getting a proper untangling and brushing of his hair. Right out of the box, he looks way more like Cousin Itt from The Addams Family than a native from Kashyyyk. Then, some paint is applied around his eyes, and fur is moved around to better hide seam lines in the nose. After that, the biggest upgrade came to Chewbacca’s signature bandolier. The materials that the animatronic comes with are ok, but could look better. So with some fabric paint and leather, M.M Prop Shop brought them up to snuff. Chewie’s base was also replaced with something more Imperial-looking and less generic.
The actual Chewbacca animatronic doesn’t come with one of his most famous items, his bowcaster. Instead, he comes with a candy cane and a Santa Claus hat. This is technically a Christmas decoration after all. So M.M. Prop Shop used 3D printing to create Chewie’s signature weapon, completing his look. After all this intense TLC, we’d say that this Chewbacca animatronic is now worthy to display all year round. We give a thunderous Wookiee growl of approval.
