REDDING, Calif. — Ways artificial intelligence (AI) has been used has been expanding from our social media to search engines and now to our drive-thrus.
In recent years, AI has been growing fast and despite the mixed reaction, it doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
According to CNN, voice AI technology in the drive-thru was previously tested by McDonalds but was shortly taken away earlier this year because of customer complaints about incorrect orders.
Now, Taco Bell said they are ready to implement AI into their systems after two years of testing. A viewer wasn’t so sure the system was ready, emailing us about troubles he had when trying to order an item without onions, so we decided to test it out ourselves.
The system greeted us, took the order very swiftly, attempted to up-sell and even asked if we wanted to round up my total for a donation. In the end, the system got our entire 15 item order correct.
People online have raised concerns about AI entering the workforce, they are convinced it will edge people out of their jobs. These concerns aren’t unfounded after Best Buy transitioned to an AI-integrated business model which in turn put Geek Squad field agents out of a job.
Although the company promised to provide severance packages for the employees who were laid off, the situation left people with a bad taste in their mouths.
In a press release by Taco Bell, they reassure that their AI ordering system is actually to help streamline the process for the employees, essentially freeing up their time.
An employee at a Taco Bell that is using the new system told KRCR he agrees with Taco Bell’s statement, and it has made his job easier.
“It’s helping me out. I used to have to double task to do both jobs taking cash and taking orders and now she does a really good job and she’s learning so it actually helps me out when I’m in the window,” said the employee.
Yum! Brands, the company that owns Taco Bell and other fast-food chains, is testing out the AI system in over 100 stores across America and is also seeing how it works in their KFCs in Australia.
