For some reason, the “sex scene” between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) in Wicked: For Good is causing all kinds of discourse. Which is a true sign of the chaste times we live in. Especially as there’s limited intimacy and no nudity in that scene, which accompanies the duet “As Long As You’re Mine.” But the pearl-clutching is rampant anyway. However, there are just as many people who love it. Especially Elphaba’s cardigan she wears before she and her lover have magical smoochy time. The cardigan has gone so viral that at a recent press event, via Deadline, reporters asked Erivo about the cardigan, and what it has come to represent to the Wicked fandom. Here’s what she had to say:
I just wanted to present an opportunity to see this character where everybody, at this point in the film, have seen Elphaba as the strong, fighting woman who is the Wicked Witch as someone who could actually, when on her own, be the opposite, when comfortable enough to be so. That’s what that was. I just wanted something that removed the armor for a second, while, yes, showing you a more sensual, more connected side of her. The aim was not to turn her into a sexual object, but instead a softer human being worthy of being loved and having an intimate moment with someone.
The scene in question also features a nearly shirtless Fiyero looking like a romance novel cover hero. So, we think there’s some equal opportunity sexiness going on. Both characters present as having mutual respect and attraction. So we agree with Erivo that there’s nothing icky or objectifying about any of this. At the end of the day, a cardigan is just a cardigan. Even if it has some sexy, witchy lingerie underneath. And a handsome prince slowly peeling it off.
