David Tennant and Doctor Who are a beloved duo like peanut butter and jelly. The actor went from being a fan of the sci-fi series as a lad to becoming one of the most popular Doctors of all-time. Tennant famously played the Tenth Doctor for several seasons before returning in the show’s 50th Anniversary special. And, he came back once again as the Fourteenth Doctor in the 60th Anniversary specials, too. While that seems like more Tennant than we’d ever imagined for Doctor Who, Steven Moffat wanted the Tenth Doctor to stay longer and take Amy Pond in the TARDIS.

This revelation came out a while ago back in 2013 when the show was preparing to celebrate 50 years of time and space adventures. (Thanks Comicbook.com for bringing it to our attention!) A few years prior, Moffat took the reins for Russell T Davies to become Doctor Who’s showrunner. He introduced us to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor as well as Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond, who are a classic team. Moffat actually offered David Tennant a chance to stay for just one more season and become Amy Pond’s magical friend with a blue box. But Tennant was understandably ready to move on from the role. But, what would’ve happened if the Tenth Doctor and Amy Pond met? Well, here’s what Moffat had to say.
“Had David stayed for one final year, it would certainly have been his last,” Moffat said. “My pitch was that it would start with the TARDIS crashing in Amelia’s back garden, and a terribly battered and bruised Tenth Doctor [would stagger] out. Amelia finds him, feeds him fish custard… and generally helps him. But we, the audience, can see he’s in a truly bad way. Dying maybe. Eventually he heads back to his TARDIS, and flies off… When he returns – many years later for Amy – he seems perfectly fine, and indeed doesn’t remember any of those events. Of course, over time, we realise what we saw was the Tenth Doctor at the end of his life, about to regenerate. Events that we [would] return to in episode 13.”
Interesting, indeed. But things always work out as they should and we got Matt Smith’s fab Doctor as the raggedy man. It is always possible that David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor could return considering he’s on Earth with his own TARDIS. But that would presumably be in the distant future… if there is a future for Doctor Who. Right now, we are still holding out hope for season three renewal news.
