Doctor Who season two’s finale was quite the doozy. The Fifteenth Doctor was up against seemingly insurmountable odds as the Ranis were trying to bring back Omega so they could create a new Time Lord race. And no, that wasn’t a good thing because, well, Omega was not a good being at all. The Fifteenth Doctor was able to defeat Omega and, with the help of his friends, reset the world back as it should be. However, the correct reset, which included saving Poppy’s life, required a great sacrifice. In a move that literally no one saw coming, the Fifteenth Doctor said farewell to Doctor Who and went into regeneration mode to turn into Billie Piper.
Yes, you read that right. It seems that Billie Piper will portray the next incarnation of the Doctor. She previously played Rose Tyler, the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s companion, as well as the Moment, which used Rose’s likeness in a holographic projection.

Is Billie Piper Really the Sixteenth Doctor in Doctor Who?
It remains to be seen if she’s the Sixteenth Doctor for sure, even if only for a short time like David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor or for a more permanent return. But the Doctor choosing an old companion’s face is a wild move, one that Russell T Davies and the entire production team kept under wraps quite well. The last we saw Rose Tyler properly, she was kissing the metacrisis Doctor on the beach and living her life on a parallel Earth with him.
Despite rumors that Ncuti Gatwa would be leaving Doctor Who, there was no confirmation. In the show’s modern era, we’ve pretty much always known when a Doctor was leaving and a new actor was coming in to replace them. It’s kinda hard to keep that secret considering everyday people snap photos and take video of filming all the time to spoil everything.

Is Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor Really Leaving Doctor Who?
And it seems that this isn’t just some glitchy moment where Billie will turn back into Ncuti. Gatwa himself took to Instagram to post farewell messages to his co-stars Millie Gibson and Varada Sethu as well as his Fifteenth Doctor. It felt like he was just getting warmed up in his role after two short seasons with questions that needed answers, like why Susan’s face came to him. Belinda Chandra and Ruby Sunday’s stories also felt incomplete and underwhelming towards the end.
We know that we likely won’t see them again now that Fifteen’s era is over. Furthermore, this idea that Rose Tyler (whom I like as a character) is somehow soooooo important to the Doctor (and the show at large) that they have to keep referencing her in various ways is exhausting. Donna’s daughter is named Rose. Her face came up as the Moment. And now the Doctor is literally using her face for an incarnation. But those are sentiments for a whole other post.
However, Billie Piper and the official Doctor Who page posted a joint video of the regeneration moment and stopped short of formally introducing her as the new Doctor. What does this mean? Well, we should find out in Doctor Who season three.
It hasn’t gotten an announcement yet but, considering the BBC contracted 26 episodes of Doctor Who with Disney+, we should be getting at least another short season of eight episodes. Let’s see exactly what’s going on with Billie Piper and this next Doctor business as time goes by in the Bad Wolf era.
