Few actors in Hollywood seem as fun to hang out with as Mads Mikkelsen. The Danish actor, known for his incredible diversity of roles, can be absolutely intense on-screen. But Mads Mikkelsen’s fans know that out of character, he’s a very chill-seeming kind of guy, always making time to say hello to those who support him and never taking himself too seriously. If you’re a collector of funny Mads Mikkelsen anecdotes, his longtime friend and collaborator, Bryan Fuller, has an incredibly hilarious one to add to the pile. While speaking to Nerdist about his upcoming movie Dust Bunny, which stars Mikkelsen, Fuller reveals that if you go bowling with Mads Mikkelsen, or even in his vicinity, you’d better be careful, he might steal your shoes.
Yes, really. What a hilarious and absurd thing to do, but the hysterical story paints a picture of Mads Mikkelsen that we enjoy hearing about. Fuller noted to us that he wrote the Dust Bunny role specifically for his friend, Mikkelsen. And that their deep friendship allowed Fuller to create a character that showcases parts of Mikkelsen that some of his other work may not always fully highlight. In this case, his “playful and rambunctious” side.
To illustrate what that meant, Fuller revealed that Mads Mikkelsen is the sort of prankster who will steal people’s shoes while they’re bowling “just to get them to chase him down the street.” And, in fact, Mikkelsen had done that very thing while the pair were bowling together… Just when we thought we couldn’t love Mads Mikkelsen more!
This insight into Mikkelsen and his Dust Bunny role also gets us extra excited for the movie to come. We love Mikkelsen in his villainous turns and his more serious roles, but there’s something that feels extra special about seeing him take on a character that is steeped with the more joyous parts of his being. Or as Fuller describes, that lean into the fact that Mikkelsen is “such a playful, boyish man.” We have a feeling Dust Bunny will bring us one of our favorite versions of Mikkelsen yet.
In the meantime, we’ll look both ways before going bowling with Mads Mikkelsen and lock our shoes up tight. Dust Bunny arrives in theaters on December 5.
