DROPS OF GOD Creators Talk Season 2’s Epic New Adventures and the Beauty of Wine Rotem Rusak | usagoldmines.com

Apple TV’s gorgeous and cerebral wine drama, Drops of God, is back for its second season. In Drops of God season two, the adventure returns us to the story of Camille and Issei, this time as they hunt for the world’s greatest wine, a wine so powerful that tasting it can actually change your life. As the new season begins to stream on Apple TV, it was Nerdist‘s pleasure to sit down with executive producer Klaus Zimmerman and Wine Consultant Sébastien Pradal to discuss the epic scope of the show, the new multicultural and multilingual awareness it brings, its manga roots, and how wine really can change your life. Take a sip of our full interview below.

Drops of God is so beautiful. It transforms the act of engaging with wine into a heightened, almost supernatural ritual. How does that evolve in season two?

Klaus Zimmermann: I think the stakes are even higher in season two. Season one was like, well, a competition of two superheroes, and we have now met them, and they are again in the second season, going on a quest. This quest is partly a competition against each other, and partly something where they have to work together. And I would say the stakes are higher because the search is for a very special wine that, when they taste it, which they do at the beginning, can actually change your life.

Yes, as season two of Drops of God‘s synopsis shares, Camille and Issei will be on the hunt for the world’s greatest wine. And can you share a little bit about what exactly that means in the series?

Klaus Zimmermann: Well, they get from their late father, they get a gift, and the gift is also a duty to find this bottle, which they can taste, but it has no label, so they need to go and find it. And the father wasn’t even able to find where it came from. And so the question is, how do you find a wine that has no label? So you need to analyze it, you need to taste it. And we have a nice investigation, I would say, around the globe, before they actually find where it’s from, and when they find where it’s from, there is again a little surprise.

Will we see any new languages or localities be introduced into Drops of God this season?

Klaus Zimmermann: Yes, we’ll introduce a country, a wine country, a very old wine country that I think most of people actually do not know, which is called Georgia. And that’s where we will go. We will also go to Greece, we will go to Spain, and again, we will go to Japan, though not just to Tokyo. We’ll visit a very remote island that is called Okinawa. So that’s where we’ll bring the audience.

One of the most unique elements of Drops of God has been how it’s woven together its different languages and cultures in a really meaningful way. Are you expanding on that in season two?

Klaus Zimmermann: Yes. I think we are actually deepening the story because season one was kind of an opening into these two worlds and two family worlds, and we now get even further into the family dramas that we left behind. And we will also witness a very interesting family story in Georgia. So I think we’ll dig deeper into these different cultures and family stories.

The pair of you must have tasted many wines while preparing for this series. What has been your greatest wine or wine memory so far?

Sébastien Pradal: So the greatest wine memory so far, I’ve got many, but maybe the first one I ever tasted when I was like 15 years old. I understood something about that being special. Then, of course, there is each one I taste. When I drink wine with a close friend or the people I love, every single bottle of wine that I drink, I can remember that experience. And, of course, a few bottles of chat of Chteauneuf-du-Pape that we shared with the crew when we were shooting the first and second seasons.

Klaus Zimmermann: Yeah, I think it is like with music, that when you taste something at a certain location or with certain with people, as Seb was saying, it’s like in a melody that comes back. And so, yeah, taste can function like a history book.

Drops of God is an adaptation of the manga by the same name. Will any new elements from that source material be introduced this season?

Klaus Zimmermann: Yes, absolutely. We have the manga, which is 44 volumes, and we couldn’t explore everything in season one, so there’s a lot of character beats and backstories that we dig into from the manga and weave into the story of season two. Absolutely.

Can you tease your favorite Easter egg that fans should look out for coming up?

Klaus Zimmermann: Oh my God. I don’t want to spoil it. I think the big question really is, though they go on this quest together, are they really doing it to help each other, or are they going to fight each other? That’s the big question.

And, no spoilers, has there been sort of an Easter egg that you put in that really made you excited?

Klaus Zimmermann: I think the whole idea of family ties was a big Easter egg in season one, and how they belong together. And so that’s something that I think was very interesting. And I think we don’t know in season two where that will lead them. And I think they are both in different places in their life when we pick them up. And the question is, will that quest destroy them? And the stakes are pretty high.

And what do you feel are kind of the core conflicts this season on Drops of God?

Klaus Zimmermann: Well, one of the core conflicts remains who is the best between them. So there’s no direct competition. And then I would say, What is it that you choose as a legacy? Do you embrace your legacy that is left behind you or are you going a different way than your parents want it for you? I that’s a key question.

Can you tease your favorite scene from the season?

Klaus Zimmermann: I think my favorite scene is when they taste the world’s greatest wine for the first time, when they discover what this wine is and what it reveals to them. And the revelation is very different for each of them. I think that scene, which comes very early in the first episode, is very strong.

Sébastien Pradal: I would say the opening scene because it was be personal, it was meeting the crew again from the first season and coming together. So it was an emotionally important moment, and we went back to the estate that welcomed us for the first season, which was wonderful. And everything had been remodeled and reconstructed for us. So it was amazing to be there. The opening scene.

One of the beautiful things about the show is that people have said they’ve really learned a lot about the wine world itself when they watch it. Do we get to explore any new elements of the wine universe this season?

Sébastien Pradal: Yes, yes, of course. In the first season, it was bit more about the sommelier, the world of the competition, et cetera. And then the second season, and maybe that’s my Easter egg, we try to speak a bit more about the winemakers and the winery’s job, like the roots of biodynamics, we speak about heritage, we speak about all those things. And I hope that the audience will be curious, and maybe we’ll dig a bit more to understand more about those subjects.

Obviously, Drops of God is a show about nerdy people who nerd out about wine, and we love nerds at Nerdist. What do you all nerd out about yourselves?

Sébastien Pradal: Obviously, wine. Yes, yes. I was so lucky to be involved in this adventure. I’m a sommelier, and I work in a restaurant. So yeah, I can tell, explain, and reveal my passion to the audience, so that’s great.
