It may have only been two years since the release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, but within the narrative of Paul Muad’Dib and Arrakis, it’s more like 17. Yes, you read that correctly. Many things have changed for the characters leading into Dune: Part Three, based on Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah. Paul (Timothee Chalamet) is fully ensconced as an Emperor, and one who wields power with an iron fist. His prenatal sister Alia is now a full Bene Gesserit priestess (Anya Taylor-Joy), and a new threat appears to challenge the Atreides reign. All of this and more can be seen in the first teaser for Dune: Part Three, which you can see below!
The opening salvos of the teaser see Paul and Chani (Zendaya) discussing possible names for their unborn child. This seems very likely to be a flashback to some time during the events of Dune: Part Two. As the events of that film come to a close Chani flees Paul who has married Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) for political convenience. But what became of the child, who’d be in their mid-to-late teens at this point? The teaser doesn’t say. However, we learn that if the child were to be a boy, Chani wants to name him Leto, after Paul’s late father, hoping for the child to share his grandfather’s wisdom.

We then see a series of very cool images of Paul conducting war cut against a scene of Paul talking to his mother, the Reverend Mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). He asks how his father ruled so effectively and she responds that Leto never started any wars. The biggest burn of all time.
The two most exciting aspects of this teaser are two characters who weren’t in the previous movie. First, we have Scytale played by Robert Pattinson. In the novel, Scytale is a Face Dancer, a shapeshifting mutant human who plays an integral part in the opposition to Muad’Dib’s regime. The second is a familiar face. Is that Jason Momoa? He played Duncan Idaho in the first Dune, but didn’t he die? Yes and yes. If you haven’t read Dune Messiah, I won’t spoil the reason for Duncan to be back.

Villeneuve described the movie as very different from the first two. He said, where the first movie is an adventure and the second movie is a war picture, Dune: Part Three is a taut thriller, much darker and moodier. This is the movie where we get to see Paul have to try to retain his power, which isn’t as easy as you’d think for someone who can see the future. He also said, though Hans Zimmer will still compose the score, the music will also sound markedly different.
But even in this first teaser, you can feel the threat. Ending with Chani at odds with Paul on the battlefield sure does offer a wild bookend to the cuddly scene at the beginning.

We can’t wait to see what more we’ll get to see in Dune: Part Three, but we’ll sadly have to wait until December 18, 2026.
