On September 23rd, Wizards of the Coast’s official actual play series, Dungeon Masters, returned with a new campaign set in the universe of World of Warcraft. Using the D&D World of Warcraft Gameplay Expansion book, veteran DM Jasmine Bhullar (DesiQuest, Critical Role) is guiding five actors/experienced D&D players through Azeroth. These, of course, include Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Neil Newbon, Theo Solomon, and Devora Wilde. Our heroes are part of a small guild called “Afterlife.” And the morning our story begins, they were robbed blind by a disgruntled member, leaving their guild treasury completely empty. Afterlife seeks to not only make their money back and increase their status within the Horde, but to eventually be sent to Northrend to be on the frontline of the war against Lich King Arthas Menethil.
Things are off to a fun start with the first two episodes of Dungeon Masters‘ third season. Who is joining the series for this excellent mashup of Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft? Let’s do a quick rundown on the players and their characters—
- Devora Wilde: One of three Baldur’s Gate 3 alums, Dev is the voice of Lae’zel. Her character is Jandi, a grouchy Troll Balance Druid.
- Neil Newbon: You know him as the voice of Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3, but in this game of Dungeons & Dragons, he’s taken up the mantle of Greave, a surly and stiff Forsaken, or World of Warcraft‘s intelligent undead… Which is a bit similar, if you think about it. He’s an Oath of the Ebon Blade Death Knight. It’s like World of Warcraft was MADE to be in the Dungeons & Dragons world.
- Theo Solomon: He’s Wyll in Baldur’s Gate 3, and now he’s orc-in-charge Rokkar, a Beastmaster Hunter. He’s also got a pet ostrich named Angela. Okay, not literally an ostrich—technically Angela is a Tallstrider, but Tallstriders look a hell of a lot like ostriches, just sayin’.
- Mayanna Berrin: Returning Dungeon Masters player Mayanna Berrin is Talonia, a Blood Elf Discipline Priest.
- Christian Navarro: Best known for his role as Tony Padilla in 13 Reasons Why, Christian is playing a character that I’m positive will become a fan-favorite: Mistik, a Goblin Assassin Rogue who speaks primarily in the third person. The voice Christian does for him gets a 10/10 for me, folks.
This group of players already has great chemistry, and seeing the party dynamic being built in real-time is fantastic. Rounding out the group is DM Jasmine Bhullar’s character, a Tauren (she’s a cow, like, a bipedal cow basically) healer named Gladiola. Speaking of excellent voices, Jasmine’s voice for Gladiola had me laughing my ass off from the start.
While the adventure is just beginning, there’s no telling where it might lead. Hopefully Northrend, but in World of Warcraft and Dungeons & Dragons both, anything is possible. I’ll definitely be tuning in for the next episode!
