Now, the Ethereum Community Foundation has turned this concept into something tangible with the launch of BETH, or Burned ETH.
Turning Proof of Burn into a Token
BETH is simple in design but big in impact. When you send ETH to the BETH smart contract, it forwards that ETH to a burn address where it can never be used again. At the same time, you receive the same amount back in BETH tokens. One ETH burned equals one BETH minted.
This new token represents proof of burn in a verifiable way. Each BETH unit reflects ETH that has been removed from circulation forever. That transparency allows anyone to audit the process and creates a record of scarcity. Ethereum already burns ETH through EIP-1559, where a portion of transaction fees is destroyed. BETH builds on that idea by making burned ETH visible, transferable, and useful within the broader ecosystem.

Scarcity is a central part of money. Gold is valued because it is rare. Bitcoin is known for its fixed supply. Ethereum, on the other hand, is constantly adjusting its supply through burning. Since EIP-1559 went live in 2021, over 4 million ETH, worth more than $10 billion, have been burned. This is according to ultrasound money. BETH gives the community a direct way to capture that value as a token.

Lee noted that Ethereum has traded flat for nearly five years, but he believes that if ETH can hold the $4,800 level, it could spark a powerful new cycle for the asset.
